Just don't use a pillow for the baby and make sure the bumper is on real tight.. Make sure the room is kept cool & not overly warm/hot. Your child is old enough to not stuff his face in the bumper and smoother himself... if you even put your hand close to your childs face he'll shake his head until you move it (obviously not choking but testing by putting your hand close to his face.. not sufforcating) he'll be fine. My daughter has had her own room since she was born. She slept in our room when she was newborn but after about 6 months she slept in her room right next door to my room with the monitor .. so I could actually hear her breath louder than when she was next to my bed in her bassinet. The bumper is also a bad idea once your baby can stand, they can use the bumper to stand on and pull themselves over the edge of the crib. Sids is very rare, but you can never be too careful. The concern is usually with infants because if they are on their tummy, or if a blanket or pillow is across their mouth they may suffocate.
