Can SIDS be caused by a crib bumper on a 1 year old?
My daughter just turned 1. So I finally started to put her back in her own room, in her crib. She use to sleep in my room in her pack play, because I was paranoid. I bought a crib bumper, so he wouldn't be able to get stuck between the poles but I heard that bumpers can cause SIDS on even a 2 year old. So I'm not sure what to do or if I should believe that can really happen? Please help!
Never ask medical questions over the Internet unless it is with a licensed doctor. That is a big no no. Everyone likes to play doctor, but they are not educated enough to give you good advice which is why you are correct in thinking you should not believe what you read over the Internet and that includes what I am about to tell you. The truth is, they are not really sure what causes SIDS but they do know that a bumper could cause suffocation.
Crib-related accidents are responsible for more childhood deaths every year than any other child-care products. According to the European Injury Database, between 2005 and 2007, some 17,000 accidents involving children from 0 to 4 years in the EU happened in the baby’s crib. The EU’s Commissioner for Consumer Affairs, Meglena Kuneva, said that “It is for each parent or carer to judge how best to manage the safety of their children. Our concern is that for parents who do want to use these products, they must be safe. Instructions must be very clear, products must really be childproof if they say they are, and products must withstand all necessary safety tests”.
With crib mattresses, the main risks are entrapment and flammability. For example, entrapment of the baby might occur due to design problems, eg inappropriate size; the mattress is too small and leaves gaps where the child can get trapped or suffocate. There are also risks due to failure to meet flammability requirements, according to a statement issued by the Commission. Sleeping bags for babies and crib bumpers might have a risk linked to strangulation, suffocation and chocking due to cords, loops and detachable parts or filling materials coming loose.
Your child is 1 year old and that's usually considered a safer point for the use of bumpers. He can hold his own head and roll over and adjust himself so likelyhood of suffocation is considerably down from when he was a newborn. Try not to worry so much and use the bumper since it will protect him from rolling over in the middle of the night and bumping his head off the bars.

Your baby is past the age where SIDS is really a concern. I’m sure he will be fine with the bumper.
The bumper is a problem with children who are too young to move if the bumper somehow starts to smother them. At one, you shouldn’t have to worry about that any more.
By that age a child is old enough to roll, and can move things from his mouth. The concern is usually with infants because if they are on their tummy, or if a blanket or pillow is across their mouth they may suffocate. So by age 1, I would consider is ok to place a bumper in the crib. I did that with both of my children.
anything in a child’s crib can cause sids, a pillow, blanket, and yes, the bumper up until the child is 18 months old. that is why they make the thickest pjs for baby, so you dont need the rest of the cushioning and covers. The bumper is also a bad idea once your baby can stand, they can use the bumper to stand on and pull themselves over the edge of the crib. Sids is very rare, but you can never be too careful. Take the bumper out, it’s just for decoration. Cribs are designed so the bars are close enough together and the baby’s head will not fit between them.
As the name implies, SIDS is the SUDDEN and UNEXPLAINED death of an infant who is younger than 1 year old.
Just don’t use a pillow for the baby and make sure the bumper is on real tight..
Make sure the room is kept cool & not overly warm/hot.
Your child is old enough to not stuff his face in the bumper and smoother himself… if you even put your hand close to your childs face he’ll shake his head until you move it (obviously not choking but testing by putting your hand close to his face.. not sufforcating)
he’ll be fine.
My daughter has had her own room since she was born.
She slept in our room when she was newborn but after about 6 months she slept in her room right next door to my room with the monitor .. so I could actually hear her breath louder than when she was next to my bed in her bassinet.
